February Roundup: Celebrating Black-Owned Restaurants in Baltimore and DC
February was a month of culinary exploration, celebrating Black History Month by visiting some exceptional Black-owned restaurants in the Baltimore and DC areas. If you missed any of my reviews, here’s a quick roundup of where I dined and the standout dishes:
Dōgon – The open-kitchen design allows diners to appreciate the culinary artistry firsthand. Highlights from the menu include the soft and buttery Coco Bread paired with whipped Malted Sorghum Butter, and the BBQ Greens, which balance sweetness and tanginess beautifully.
St. James – The Jerk Wings stand out with their smoky flavor and perfect spice balance, complemented by a sweet dipping sauce. The Oxtails are tender, featuring a rich and complex seasoning that hints at spices like nutmeg or cinnamon, and pair excellently with coconut rice. The Pepper Shrimp, cooked to perfection, are enhanced by a bold sauce and the unique Black Rice made with djon djon mushrooms, shrimp stock, and coconut milk.
Yebo Kitchen – The Deep-Fried Strawberry Shortcake Biscuits are a standout, offering a crispy exterior and soft interior reminiscent of a freshly fried donut, accompanied by fresh strawberries and a light strawberry cream. The Yebo Omelet is generously filled with lobster, crawfish, crabmeat, and cheese, topped with a flavorful Cajun-style sauce. The Lobster Fried Rice, buttery and slightly sweet from eel sauce, is crowned with a fried lobster tail, offering a delightful blend of flavors.
Spice Kitchen Grill – The Grilled Corn offers a sweet and flavorful side, enhanced by the restaurant's signature seasoning. The Efo Riro (Spinach Stew) is a revelation, boasting savory and rich flavors infused with onions, peppers, and spices, making it a must-try dish.
Each of these establishments offers a unique and flavorful dining experience, reflecting the rich diversity of Baltimore and D.C. If you have any recommendations for must-visit Black-owned restaurants, feel free to share—I’d love to add them to my list.
Cheers to great food, culture, and community!
